CREDIBILITY ISSUE BEFORE CANDIDATE ANNOUNCEMENT
WASHINGTON'S ORGANIZATION NO LONGER TAX EXEMPT
By Joint Staff Report (June, 2012)
SAUK VILLAGE | Not even out of the starting gate the campaign of Lynda Washington has taken a turn which raises even more questions about the candidates credibility and may pose some legal problems with the Internal Revenue Service for the beleaguered Washington.
Washington who maintains on her website and Twitter account that she has a “not-for-profit” organization called KEL-LAW Foundation incorporated. The only problem is that the Internal Revenue Service has revoked the not-for-profit status “for its failure to file a Form 990-series return or notice for three consecutive years” according to the IRS. "Anyone making donations to organizations who are no longer tax exempt are not able to write of such donations after the notice is published by the IRS" a spokesperson from the IRS indicated.
The revocation took effect on May 15, 2010, which predated Washington’s last attempt at office when she made claims of the organization’s not-for-profit status.
According to the organization’s website “the KEL-LAW Foundation, Inc. was founded on March 3, 1995 by Eric J. Kellogg & Lynda Allen-Washington. This organization is a NON-For-Profit organization with a 501c3 status.” Eric J. Kellogg is the mayor of Harvey
The KEL-LAW Foundation was named as a “charitable” organization on the New Progress Party State Board of Elections organization filing for the disposition of residual funds according to election records filed December 29, 2010 after KEL-LAW was no longer a 501c3 charitable organization according to the IRS.
Washington states on her website that they are very “excitied (sic) to be recognized by Elected Officials, inclusive senators, mayors, aldermen, trustees,
congressemen (sic), etc. who have provided us with congratulatory letters for our extensive community contributions during our past 18 years of community
awareness and service”. The site does not list the names of any of these officials. Washington’s website also states as of this report “We welcome all
donations no matter how big or small. We appreciate any amount of monetary or In-Kind donation, you or your organization can provide. Please note that our organization is tax exempt.” The statement made on the website is contradictory to the IRS Code according to the spokesperson.
Washington continues to maintain that she will be announcing that she is running for Village Trustee for Sauk Village in April, 2013. Washington provided this reporter with a written annoucement and invitation and also indicated she was "going to run for Trustee of Sauk Village" in a cordial conversation. The announcement is actually a fundraiser for her “Announcement of Intent to run for Sauk Village Trustee” in Matteson, Illinois.
Washington was beaten at the polls when she ran for Village Trustee in Sauk Village coming in last place, in April, 2011. The People’s Voice Party candidates Derrick Burgess, David Hanks and Robert Chavez won by a margin of 3 to 1. Washington was running with then incumbent Trustee Francine Anderson, a
one-term Trustee, who has remained bitter against the Trustees who bested her and her running mates. Anderson is joined with Bernice Houston (aka-Bernice Brewer) both have recently filed a lawsuit against the Village of Sauk Village which is likely to cost the taxpayers even more money in legal fees.

Candidates running for office, while not perfect, are not exempt from following the rules and most of all the law. The scrutiny of the public and news media are all part of getting to understand the intentions and plans that candidates running for office may have. We look forward to a very lively open and public debate and examination of the candidates. It is the duty of a good citizen to investigate and find out the truth, we invite you to please do likewise]
